INT. MIKUMART - CONTINUOUS
Ran dispels her transformation before running to catch up to Watanabe. Her shopping basket remains empty and discarded on the floor.
WATANABE
Ran? What are you doing?
RAN
Mr. Watanabe, your work can’t
seriously call you back at this time.
WATANABE
That’s not my decision to make, Ran.
RAN
Yeah, but look at you! You’re
practically a zombie. Er, no offense.
(beat)
Are you sure nobody else can help
you? I can try asking my mom.
WATANABE
That won’t be necessary.
He sighs wearily.
WATANABE (CONT’D)
I appreciate you looking out for my
health, Ran, but as an adult, I have
responsibilities that I can’t abandon.
(beat)
You’ll understand someday.
RAN
But–-
WATANABE
Ran, I appreciate what you’re trying to
do. I also appreciate how much your
mom has helped me out.
(beat)
However, work isn’t always meant to
be fun. Sometimes, it’s a means to an
end.
RAN
Did you used to find your work fun?
WATANABE
I did, once. But that’s in the past. It
pays the bills now, and that’s all I can
ask for.
RAN
Is there anything I can do to help?
WATANABE
No, but I promise I’ll take better care
of myself. I wouldn’t want you or your
mom to worry.
(beat)
Thank you for taking the time to talk
to me, but I’m assuming you should
probably get back to your errands
now?
RAN
Right, I almost completely forgot
about the groceries again!
(beat)
It was nice seeing you again. I’ll tell
my mom you said hi.
Ran shuffles awkwardly in place, before blurting out:
RAN (CONT’D)
I hope work goes well for you
Mr. Watanabe.
WATANABE
I hope so, too.
There’s a wistful expression on Watanabe’s face, but it vanishes as quickly as it appears.
WATANABE (CONT’D)
I’ll be going now. Have a good
evening, Ran.
RAN
Thanks. You too, Mr. Watanabe.
Watanabe waves Ran farewell before gathering the rest of his groceries and leaving.
Ran watches him go with furrowed brows and a heavy frown. Her hands ball into fists by her side as she gnaws the inside of her cheek in frustration.
When Watanabe is gone from sight, Ran slumps her shoulders in defeat before turning back to grab her empty basket.
END SCENE.
